I live in the former capital of the Confederacy, Richmond, Va. Recently, we had a water crisis. As is often the case with old unattended infrastructure, our water mains had several fails during a recent snow storm. The entire city, then county lost access to water. I watched people in the grocery store getting frantic as the usual supply of water ran out. I read the news reports of the city setting up sites all over to try and get folks water, for which there would be several hours wait times, anger and disappointments.

If you are a follower of my musings, you will know what happened next. Yep, like clockwork, the Holy Spirit began speaking. The Spirit began speaking two scriptures to me

Jeremiah 2:13 (AMP):For My people have committed two evils:
They have abandoned (rejected) Me,
The fountain of living water,
And they have carved out their own cisterns,
Broken cisterns
That cannot hold water.

And Jer. 14:3: “Their nobles have sent their servants for water;
They have come to the cisterns and found no water.
They have returned with empty vessels;
They have been shamed and humiliated,
And they cover their heads.

                                     The spiritual implications of people running to their usual sources of water and finding them having run dry is powerful. Water, of course, is necessary for our existence. Bathing, cooking, drinking all require water. The Lord would have His people to be alerted to the spiritual crisis we are in. Since I began working on this ‘Stack, the crisis worsened and extended to two more counties. The fact that you cannot run to your earthly sources for the water that you need to sustain life should spark an urgency in your spirit if you claim the Jesus of Scripture. The sources that you previously turned to in order to give you some semblance of sustenance are running dry. The cisterns are broken and cannot hold water. You will continue to only find empty cisterns and disappointments when you choose to continue to rely on those systems.

This is the warning that was reported in our local paper a few days ago concerning our water:

Richmond’s public water system was found to be crumbling, broken down and filthy during a 2022 federal inspection, with debris ranging from algae to chemical leaks found throughout various parts of the system.”

The Living God is making an inspection. He sees the crumbling, broken down and filth in the systems we have trusted in. He sounds the warning of the contaminants to our souls that is in those systems. Return to the Wellspring of Life, the Refreshing Spring where the living waters will refresh your spirit and renew your life. Allow the Spirit of God to flush the contaminations of the world from your life and fill you to overflowing with rivers of living water (John 7:38).

It is well past time for God’s people to return to the Cistern of Life that can only be found in the Living God.
